Launch of the new eatwell guide - A revised Healthy Eating Model

In March 2016, Public Health England published a refreshed version of the UK’s healthy eating model which replaces the eatwell plate.

The Eatwell Guide

The Eatwell Guide has been developed from evidence based nutrition advice, and is designed in a pictorial form to show the different types of foods and drinks we should consume – and in what proportions – to have a healthy, balanced diet.

Starchy food is a really important part of a healthy diet and should make up just over a third of the food we eat. As part of the main messages of the Eatwell Guide it advises consumers to base their meals on starchy carbohydrates, by choosing wholegrain or higher fibre versions with less added fat, salt and sugar. Wholegrain food includes wholegrain breakfast cereals and whole oats amongst others. Wholegrain foods contain more fibre than white or refined starchy foods, and higher intakes of fibre have been associated with a lower incidence of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer.
