Professor Tom Sanders Presents The Health Benefits Of Breakfast Cereal
Professor Tom Sanders, Head of Nutrition at King’s College London, today presented ‘The Health Benefits of Breakfast Cereal’, as the Association of Cereal Food Manufacturers’ (ACFM)*, first guest speaker.
During his briefing at the Charlotte Street Hotel, London, Prof. Sanders provided an insight into cereal’s historical links as a healthy breakfast option, before exploring current issues surrounding recommendations from The Public Health White Paper, and the implications of government’s proposals.
Focussing on the proposed Food Labelling Signposting, he explored the basis of ‘Nutrient Profiling’, and the difficulties in enforcing what he described as a “simplistic idea that does not work in practice”. He also touched on the political consequences
of accepting this form of food labelling in the UK.
Child Nutrition was a key focus for Prof. Sanders, and he was keen to stress the importance of breakfast cereals in children’s diets, highlighting the fact that those who eat breakfast perform better and have fewer behavioural problems. He then worked to dispel some of the myths surrounding breakfast cereals, and put forward facts on the significant benefits breakfast cereals play in daily nutrition, performance and overall child development.
Professor Sanders closed the session with summary comments:
“Breakfast cereals make an important contribution to micronutrient intake; only a small contribution to
the intake of salt and added sugar; and are a cheap and healthy start to the day.”
The briefing is the first event for ACFM’s Breakfast Cereal Information Service (BCIS), which is a new service bringing easily accessible information on the breakfast cereal industry to the media.
