ACFM Response to the FSA Nutrient Profiling Consultation Paper
The Association of Cereal Food Manufacturers (ACFM) supports the objective of the FSA to help consumers make healthier food choices. However, we are concerned that an opportunity to take a genuinely representative scientific and objective approach to this important issue has potentially been lost.
In line with professionals – including dietitians and nutritionists, we feel that any profiling system should reflect the way the food is eaten e.g. cereal with milk, and the quantity consumed. We have concerns over the proposed model in its current format, as it fails to accurately take into account these concepts, which are key determinants of healthy eating and nutrition education.
Over 95% of households stock breakfast cereals and it remains the most popular form of breakfast in the UK. With research showing that 1 in 5 children are skipping breakfast and going to school on an empty stomach, breakfast cereals remain a quick, healthy and nutritious way to start the day.
The ACFM will continue to work closely with government and its advisory bodies to achieve proper consideration and careful analysis of the proposed model, in order to meet the required objective of helping consumers make healthier food choices.
