Why have breakfast - Meet the experts

Performance related benefits

• Breakfast is vital in supporting a physically active lifestyle because it is important to ensure your blood sugar levels are topped up before exercising in the morning; this makes sure you have sufficient energy stores

• Do choose a carbohydrate-rich breakfast before exercising. Carbohydrate is the main source of fuel for most exercise and will give you the energy you need for peak performance

• Try introducing some activity into your morning routine, such as walking the children to school or walking to work; even try taking the bus instead and walk some of the way. Just leave the car at home!

• Proper nutrition and physical activity often go hand-in-hand, such as with athletes who always eat healthily for top physical performance

• Be your own athlete... Be active as much as you can and pay attention to your food; breakfast is, literally, a great start

• Physical activity is close to being the 'magic pill' for health! It is absolutely vital for positive health and fighting off major health problems, such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes

• Physical activity also helps boost mental functioning and positive mood, and so does having breakfast. Why not combine the two?

• For achieving and maintaining a health bodyweight it is important to combine healthy eating, including breakfast, with more physical activity

Stuart Biddle Prof. Stuart Biddle, Head of the School of Sport & Exercise Sciences, Loughborough University

"Breakfast literally means 'breaking the fast' and for some people, especially children, the 'fast' can be as long as 16 hours! It is crucial for kick-starting the day and providing the body with the energy/fuel it needs to function physically and mentally both at work and school.

Many people need to be more physically active and breakfast is very important in helping us to do this. Recent research has also shown that people who eat breakfast generally have better overall nutrition."
